What if I decide not to attend or need to pull my child out of school before the end of the year?
If you decide that your child will not attend please contact the office or the director so they can make arrangements for another child to fill the spot. However, the $50 registration fee is non-refundable. Tuition is an averaged flat rate every month September through May. There are no refunds for days missed due to illness, vacation or withdrawing from First Steps Preschool.

What if I can’t pick up my child? Can someone else do it?
No child will be released to a person other than the one bringing them to First Steps Preschool, unless written notice has been provided at the time of the child’s arrival or in the child’s enrollment packet. If someone other than parent will pick up the child, notice must be given at the time of arrival or the parent must call the director.

Should I stay to get my child settled when dropping them off?
For some children, this is their first separation from their parents. We understand that this is often a difficult experience for youngsters. It is important to let your child know you are leaving, but will come back for them after class. For the first few days you may want to stay 5 to 10 minutes in the hallway or car. We will be glad to check on your child’s progress. Your classroom teacher will let you know when your child feels comfortable with the new environment.

What will happen if my child acts up in class?
Our goal is to direct students toward positive and acceptable behavior, which helps develop self-control. The safety and welfare of the group will have priority over any individual situation. Most situations will be handled by the teachers through a verbal reminder or by restricting the child’s privileges. Any discipline problems that persist or are disruptive to the class will be shared with parents so teachers and parents can work together to correct the behavior.

What should I do if my child is sick?
If your child is sick, please keep him/her home. Sickness includes: any fever in the past 24 hrs, diarrhea, vomiting, frequent coughing, sore throat, congestion, thick mucus with color, rashes, pinkeye, chicken pox, head lice, or any other indication of sickness. Please bring a note from the doctor stating that your child is well enough to return to class if any contagious illness has occurred. If your child becomes sick at school, parents will be called immediately to come pick up their child.
Children need to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.
What should my child bring?
Our toddler classes and older will need a nap mat for nap time. You may also bring a special blanket or stuffed animal for nap time if necessary. Your child will need a lunch box every day. Please make sure the food items do not need to be heated and a frozen insert is recommended since we do not store the lunch boxes in a refrigerator at school. All children will need a bag or a backpack with an extra pair of clothes. If your child is not potty trained, please provide enough diapers for the day.

What should my child wear?
Clothes that are comfortable and easy for them to remove for toileting are best. Children do have scheduled playtime each day, so please consider appropriate shoes such as tennis shoes and some types of sandals. For babies, crawlers, toddlers, and others not potty trained, we do ask that diapers, wipes and a change of clothes are provided.

Can I bring a treat for my child’s birthday?
We do celebrate birthdays at First Steps Preschool! If you like, you may bring special refreshments to share with your child’s class. If you decide to do so, we ask that you make arrangements with your child’s teacher in advance.
